Pest control is one of those services where the price quoted on the phone tells you very
little about what you are actually buying. Here is what is worth checking before you hire anyone
in the Las Vegas Valley, including a licensing detail most homeowners never think to ask about.

1. Check the license category, not just the license

Nevada pest control operators must hold a Pest Control Operator business license and individual
applicator licenses issued by the Nevada Department of Agriculture. Crucially, the state issues
separate categories for general pest control and for termite and wood-destroying organism
work. Under Nevada Administrative Code 555.460, a general pest control license does not authorize termite or WDO work.
That requires a separate category license.

So the useful question is not “are you licensed” but “which categories do you hold, and does
that cover the work you are quoting me?” Any legitimate operator will answer that immediately.

2. Ask how they handle rodent bait

This is a fast way to tell a professional from a chancer. Under Nevada Department of Agriculture rules, all outdoor
above-ground rodenticide must be placed in a tamper-resistant bait station within fifty feet of a
building, consumer-size products may not contain second-generation anticoagulants, and loose bait
pellets are prohibited for consumer sale. If someone proposes scattering pellets in your yard,
that is a problem.

3. Insist on an inspection before a quote

A flat price quoted over the phone without anyone looking at the property means the plan is
generic. The valley is not uniform. A 1978 Green Valley home with forty-year-old olive trees has a
roof rat profile. A 2024 build on the desert edge in Enterprise has a scorpion profile. The
Southern Nevada Health District attributes valley roof rat prevalence specifically to mature vegetation,
year-round irrigation, and fruit trees, which is a description of some neighborhoods and not
others.

4. Ask whether scorpion inspections are done at night

Bark scorpions fluoresce yellow-green under ultraviolet light. A genuine scorpion assessment is
done after dark with a blacklight, because a daytime walkthrough will miss most of what is on the
property. If a company is selling scorpion control but only inspects at midday, they are guessing.

5. Understand what one treatment can and cannot do

In a climate that gives pests year-round harborage, a single service resets the clock rather
than breaking the cycle. Most valley properties need at least bi-monthly service to hold a result.
Be sceptical of anyone promising permanent elimination from one visit, and equally sceptical of
anyone who cannot explain why they are recommending a given frequency.

6. Read the contract terms carefully

• Is there a minimum term, and what does cancelling cost?
• Are re-treatments between scheduled visits included or billed?
• Does the price change after the first year?
• Is the initial service priced separately from ongoing service?

7. Ask about exclusion, not just chemicals

For scorpions and rodents specifically, sealing entry points does more long-term good than any
product. If the proposal is entirely spray and bait with no mention of weep holes, door sweeps,
roof vents, or vegetation management, it will underperform.

Red flags

• Door-to-door pressure sales with a same-day-only discount
• No written scope of work
• Unmarked vehicles and no visible license information
• Refusal to name the products being applied
• Guarantees of permanent eradication
• Quotes given without an inspection

Every summer the same thing happens across the Las Vegas Valley. The first serious monsoon
storm rolls through, the washes run, and within a few days homeowners start finding scorpions
indoors, cockroaches in the garage, and rodents in the attic. It is not a coincidence.

The monsoon window

Southern Nevada’s monsoon season runs roughly July through September. KTNV Las Vegas has
reported pest control experts describing a spike in service calls to valley homes during that
window, driven by the sudden combination of heavy rain, standing water, and flooded drainage
channels in an environment that is otherwise extremely dry.

That window also overlaps with the annual peak in scorpion envenomations, which the
Journal of Medical Toxicology review found occurs nationally in August and September. Late summer is when the
two curves meet.

Why rain drives pests inside

Flooded harborage. Scorpions, spiders, and roaches shelter in block wall
voids, landscape rock, irrigation boxes, and wash banks. When those flood, the occupants move to
the nearest dry space, which is usually the inside of a building.

Standing water. Mosquito season in Southern Nevada runs April through October
under Southern Nevada Health District mosquito surveillance, and post-storm standing water in pool covers, planters, tyres, and
clogged drains produces new breeding sites within days.

Humidity. Cockroaches in particular respond quickly to a jump in humidity,
and monsoon moisture combined with irrigation gives them what a dry June does not.

Wash channels. Communities near the valley’s drainage system see this most
acutely. The Las Vegas Wash flows southeast through
North Las Vegas on its way to
Lake Mead, and the channel network is a documented flash flood corridor.

A pre-monsoon checklist

The right time to do this is June, before the first storm.

• Grade and drainage. Make sure water runs away from the foundation, and clear
  drains and scuppers so water does not pool against the house.
• Weep holes and door sweeps. Screen weep holes and fit sweeps on garage and
  exterior doors. This is the main entry route for scorpions.
• Seal penetrations. Utility, cable, HVAC, and plumbing entries.
• Clear harborage. Move firewood, pull landscape rock and dense ground cover
  back from the foundation, and clear debris from the yard perimeter.
• Eliminate standing water. Empty saucers, buckets, tyres, and pool covers
  within 48 hours of a storm. Mosquitoes can complete a cycle very quickly in summer heat.
• Trim vegetation off the structure. Branches touching the roof are a rodent
  bridge and a scorpion route.
• Get on service before July. A barrier established in spring performs far
  better than an emergency call in August.

What to expect after a storm

Activity usually rises for one to two weeks after a significant storm, then settles. If you
are seeing repeated indoor sightings rather than a single incident, the issue is almost always an
entry point rather than a treatment gap, and it needs an inspection rather than another spray.

Why bark scorpion stings are treated differently

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension identifies the Arizona bark scorpion as the most venomous scorpion in North
America and the only scorpion species in Nevada considered seriously dangerous. Every other
scorpion you are likely to encounter in the valley, including the large and intimidating giant
desert hairy scorpion, produces a sting closer to a bee sting in severity.

The reason this matters is age. The eleven-year review of poison control data published in the
Journal of Medical Toxicology found that children under ten in Arizona and Nevada had the highest rates of systemic
effects, hospitalization, and intensive care admission of any group studied. Nevada ranked second
nationally in scorpion exposure reports.

What a bark scorpion sting typically feels like

Banner Health Poison Control describes bark scorpion stings as producing intense localized pain, tingling
or numbness, and sometimes very little visible swelling, which surprises people who expect a
dramatic wound. Symptoms that involve the whole body, such as difficulty swallowing, muscle
twitching, roving eye movements, or breathing difficulty, are the ones that require immediate
emergency care, and they are most common in young children.

Immediate steps

1. Wash the area with soap and water.
2. Apply a cool compress. Do not apply heat.
3. Keep the affected limb at or below heart level.
4. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance, even if symptoms seem mild.
5. Seek emergency care immediately for any child, or for any adult with symptoms beyond the
   sting site.
6. If you can safely do so, photograph the scorpion. Identification helps clinicians.

Do not cut the wound, apply a tourniquet, or attempt to suck out venom. None of these help.

Identifying a bark scorpion

Bark scorpions are small, roughly two to three inches including the tail, light tan or straw
coloured, slender, with a notably thin tail and slim pincers. The giant desert hairy scorpion is
much larger, darker, visibly hairy, and has thick pincers. Bark scorpions also glow bright
yellow-green under a UV blacklight, which is the standard way to survey a property at night.

Where stings happen in Las Vegas homes

Most stings are contact stings rather than aggressive ones. The recurring pattern is
predictable: putting on shoes left in the garage, picking up a towel from a bathroom floor,
reaching into a laundry basket, walking barefoot at night, or moving items in storage. Bark
scorpions seek dark, damp harborage, so those are exactly the places they end up.

Practical habits that genuinely reduce risk:

• Shake out shoes, towels, and clothing that have been on the floor
• Keep beds away from walls and skirts off the floor
• Use a nightlight or torch when walking through the house at night
• Keep laundry off the floor and hampers closed
• Wear gloves when moving rock, wood, or stored items outdoors

Stopping it at the structure

Because bark scorpions climb stucco and block walls easily, keeping them out is an exclusion
problem more than a spraying problem. Sealing weep holes, fitting door sweeps, closing utility
penetrations, and clearing harborage away from the foundation is what reduces indoor encounters
over time.

If you hear scratching in the ceiling at night in an older Las Vegas neighborhood, you are
almost certainly dealing with roof rats rather than mice or Norway rats. This is one of the
best-documented pest problems in the valley, and the reason it happens is not a mystery.

What the health district found

The Southern Nevada Health District has tracked urban rodent complaints since 2003. Its programme set live
traps at more than 300 homes across 35 valley ZIP codes and captured nearly 200 roof rats.

The health district’s explanation for why roof rats do so well here is specific, and it
describes established valley neighborhoods almost exactly:

• Dense vegetation, particularly palms and cypress, which give cover and travel routes
• Year-round water from swimming pools and landscape irrigation
• Abundant food from fruit trees, pet food left outdoors, and open bins
• Very few natural predators in an urban desert environment

One important detail: the health district does not perform extermination. Removing an
established roof rat population falls to licensed private pest control.

Why newer subdivisions see fewer roof rats

Newly built areas on the valley’s edge tend to have young landscaping, thin canopy, and no
mature fruit trees. They have a scorpion and spider problem instead. Established areas have the
opposite profile. That is why a home in
Spring Valley or Green Valley
in Henderson needs a different
plan from a new build in
Enterprise.

How to tell it is roof rats

• Noise in the ceiling or upper walls at dusk and after dark, not at floor level
• Droppings roughly half an inch long with pointed ends, often in the attic or on top of
  cabinets
• Gnaw marks on soffit edges, roof vents, and irrigation lines
• Stripped fruit or citrus rind shells left in trees
• Greasy rub marks along beams and pipe runs

What actually gets rid of them, in order

1. Trim the highways. Roof rats reach your roof by climbing. Cut tree limbs
back at least four feet from the roofline, skirt palms, and clear vines off walls. Skipping this
step is the single most common reason a rodent job fails and the rats come back.

2. Seal the entry points. Roof and gable vents, soffit gaps, tile roof edges,
and utility penetrations. A roof rat can pass through a gap the size of a quarter. Sealing has to
happen before or alongside trapping, not after.

3. Trap, do not just bait. Interior trapping removes the animals so they do
not die inside a wall cavity. Bait alone in an attic is how you end up with an odour problem.

4. Remove the food and water. Pick fruit, bring pet food in overnight, fix
irrigation leaks, and secure bins.

Nevada rules on rodent bait

This matters if you have children or pets. Under Nevada Department of Agriculture rules, consumer-size rodenticide
products may not contain second-generation anticoagulants, loose bait pellets are prohibited for
consumer sale, and all outdoor above-ground rodenticide must be placed in a tamper-resistant bait
station within fifty feet of a building. Any licensed operator working on your property should be
following those rules without being asked.

Do not wait it out

Roof rats breed year-round in a mild climate with reliable water. A pair found in October is a

Almost every Las Vegas homeowner eventually finds a scorpion in the garage, the laundry
room, or worse, on a bedroom wall. The most common question we get is simple: when does this
stop? Here is what the actual data shows, rather than the month-by-month “pest calendars”
that get copied between pest company blogs without a source behind them.

Scorpion stings peak in August and September

A review of eleven years of United States poison control data published in the Journal of Medical Toxicology
found that scorpion envenomations follow a clear seasonal curve, peaking nationally in August
and September. That same study found Arizona and Nevada were the top two states in the country
for scorpion exposure reports, with Arizona accounting for 68.2 percent and Nevada 4.2 percent
of cases.

The study also found something worth taking seriously if you have kids: children under ten
in Arizona and Nevada had the highest rates of systemic effects, hospitalization, and intensive
care admission. This is the reason we treat scorpions as a safety issue and not a nuisance
issue.

Why late summer is the worst window

Two things overlap in the Las Vegas Valley in late summer. Scorpion activity is already at
its annual high, and Southern Nevada’s monsoon season runs roughly July through September.
Local reporting by KTNV Las Vegas has documented pest control service calls climbing during that
window as heavy rain floods the valley’s wash system and pushes scorpions, cockroaches, and
rodents toward the dry interiors of buildings.

If you only do one thing differently this year, make sure your home is already under
treatment before the monsoon arrives rather than calling after the first sighting.

Scorpions do not disappear in winter

Bark scorpions do not migrate and they do not die off in the cold. They move into protected
harborage: block wall voids, weep holes, attics, garages, and wall cavities. A quiet winter
usually means the population has relocated inward, not that it has gone away. That is why
one-off summer treatments rarely solve the problem. The colony survives the winter inside the
structure and re-emerges in spring.

Which scorpion you actually have

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension identifies the Arizona bark scorpion as the most venomous scorpion in
North America and the only species in Nevada considered seriously dangerous. It is small,
light tan or straw-coloured, and slender, with a very thin tail. The much larger, hairier
giant desert hairy scorpion looks far more alarming but is significantly less dangerous.

Two facts about bark scorpions drive everything we do on a treatment:

• They climb. Bark scorpions can climb stucco, block walls, and interior
  drywall. This is why they turn up on ceilings and on second floors. A ground-level perimeter
  spray alone will not keep them out.
• They fluoresce. Under ultraviolet light they glow yellow-green. A real
  scorpion inspection is done after dark with a blacklight. A daytime walkthrough will miss most
  of what is on the property.

Where they hide on a Las Vegas property

Banner Health Poison Control notes that bark scorpions seek dark, damp places. On valley homes that means
pool equipment areas, irrigation valve boxes, laundry rooms, damp towels, shoes left in the
garage, and clothing left on the floor. Outdoors, they use landscape rock, block wall gaps,
wood piles, and the weep holes in stucco.

What actually reduces scorpion numbers

Chemistry alone is the weakest part of scorpion work. What moves the needle is exclusion:

• Sealing weep holes with stainless screen rather than caulk
• Fitting proper door sweeps on garage and exterior doors
• Sealing utility, cable, and plumbing penetrations
• Closing gaps at block wall caps and expansion joints
• Pulling landscape rock, wood piles, and dense ground cover away from the foundation
• Reducing the insect population scorpions feed on
