Bark scorpions are a genuine health concern here, not a nuisance

The Arizona bark scorpion is the most venomous scorpion in North America, and it is the only scorpion species in Nevada considered seriously dangerous. A review of eleven years of US poison control data found Arizona and Nevada were the top two states in the country for scorpion exposure reports, and that children under ten in those two states had the highest rates of systemic effects, hospitalization and ICU admission.

Bark scorpions climb. They will scale stucco, block walls and interior walls, which is why they turn up on ceilings and in second-floor bathrooms. They are drawn to dark, damp places: laundry rooms, pool decks, damp towels, and clothing left on the floor. They also fluoresce under UV light, which is why a proper scorpion inspection happens at night with a blacklight rather than at noon.

Roof rats thrive in the Valley’s greenest neighborhoods

The Southern Nevada Health District has tracked urban rodent complaints since 2003, setting live traps at more than 300 homes across 35 ZIP codes and capturing nearly 200 roof rats. Their explanation for why roof rats do so well here is specific: dense vegetation like palms and cypress, year-round water from pools and irrigation, fruit trees and pet food, and very few natural predators.

That combination describes established Las Vegas neighborhoods almost exactly. The health district does not perform extermination — that falls to licensed private pest control.

Monsoon season moves pests indoors

Southern Nevada’s monsoon season runs roughly July through September, and local reporting has documented pest control service calls climbing during that window. Heavy rain floods the wash system and drives scorpions, roaches and rodents toward the dry, cool interiors of buildings. Mosquito season is longer, running April through October under health district surveillance.

Treatment timing matters more than treatment strength

A single service will not clear an established infestation. We recommend bi-monthly service at minimum for most Las Vegas properties, because the desert gives pests year-round harborage and a one-time treatment simply resets the clock rather than breaking the cycle.
